Canal Towpath, Milnsbridge — Left Shoe, Brown

Canal towpath, Milnsbridge  ·  Shoe #116  ·  Conditions: warm, still

Flask conditions poor — forgot the milk. That's in the book in my own hand and there's no getting round it. Nine years on I can confirm the system that come out of it: the milk goes in the bag the night before, next to the flask, and it has done ever since. You learn more from the poor days than the good ones.

The shoe deserved better company. Left shoe, brown, lace-up sort, laces gone and the tongue missing an' all, on the towpath at Milnsbridge near the Morley Lane bridge. A shoe missing its tongue is rarer than a shoe missing its laces — the laces go first, nearly always — and I remember turning that over while drinking tea that weren't right.

Warm and still. Two photographs, one came out. The entry ends 'noted it and moved on', which is shorter than my endings usually ran by 2017, and I suspect the flask situation shortened it. Milnsbridge has been steady ground for me over the years and it weren't the towpath's fault.

Written up August 2026, from the notebook.
