2013 were the year Barry from Dewsbury first wrote in. His photograph were that poor I couldn't tell whether I were looking at a shoe or a bin bag, so I drove over to Crow Nest Park and confirmed it in person, which is how it's been done ever since. Only confirmed shoes get a number. Barry's photography has come on a great deal since then, to be fair to him. Transcribing the notebook now, I notice the entries getting longer without me ever deciding owt about it. Weather's in most of them by this point. I also see I went past fifty shoes in the July and didn't mark the occasion, which sounds about right. Cold spring that year — snow on Castle Hill at the end of March — then that hot spell in July. Same blue biro throughout, which weren't always the case in later notebooks. It were a good year, though I'd not have said so at the time. Mostly I remember being glad somebody else were looking. I don't think I mentioned that to anybody either.
