Rigby Woods, Huddersfield — Right Work Boot, Tan, In the Drain

Went back up to the wood to look at the place where 274 had been. It is not there any more, which I knew before I set off, but I wanted to see it. Found a work boot in the drain on the way out and were glad of it. The matter of 274 is not settled and I will say so plainly.

Pule Hill, Marsden — Ladies' Heeled Shoe, Red, On the Wall

Took the Tuesday off and walked up Pule Hill. Found a red shoe on the wall with a heel on it like nowt I've come across in seventeen years. You'd not get ten yards in it up there. Our Linda had packed me a Japanese dinner I did not understand.

Our Linda booked it sharpish after the business with the car. Seven nights on a boat down the Nile. I weren't to look for shoes. I saw one on the bank we sailed past. And I found one at Karnak.

Went to put the folding stool away. There were a boot in the boot. Not mine. Not Our Linda's. I have not decided where this one goes. I had my lunch in the car.

Beaumont Park, Huddersfield — Ladies' Court Shoe, Black, On the Bench

Half-day Wednesday. Took an hour at the park. A ladies' court shoe sat upright on a bench facing the valley. There were summat tucked in the toe. I've put it back.

Putting the torch back in the airing cupboard. Hand caught on summat that weren't the torch. A left shoe, brown, size ten, behind the boiler. Not mine. Not Our Linda's. New ledger.

First proper outing since I got back. Walked up to the tower. A right boot on the wall, facing the valley. You could see for miles. A grounding sort of shoe.

Someone had placed it on the lock mechanism with care. A narrowboat nearly took it. I didn't intervene. You can't interfere.
