Hollow Below the Ridge Path, Near Emley — Left Boot

Hollow below the ridge path, near Emley  ·  Shoe #121  ·  Conditions: mast in view the whole time

This is the Emley boot, and I'll give the plain register version here, because that's what this page is for. Left boot, reasonable condition, laces present, tied loose. In the hollow below the ridge path near Emley, with the mast in view the whole time — you can't be anywhere on that ridge without it, and I noted it because it were a fact of the morning, not because it meant owt.

I went over on account of the folder. A description had come in that matched near enough to warrant the trip, and by October 2017 the folder had been open two years and I owed it a proper look. Seventeen photographs, which is the most I'd taken of any shoe up to that point, and not all of which came out. Over an hour on the stool. Cheese and pickle. I checked the boot against everything the folder held, item by item, sat there in the hollow with the notebook open on my knee.

It wasn't the one. I wrote that in the book on the day, I said it to the forum after, and I'd say it now with nine more years behind me. The boot went in the register on its own merits, logged same as any other, which is what the entry says and what I did. The register records what were there.

I have written about this one at greater length elsewhere on this website, under the heading I am careful about.

Written up August 2026, from the notebook.
