First of 2012, and the first entry anywhere in the notebooks with the weather in it. Cold and dry, it says. I don't remember deciding to write that down. It's just there, after the shoe, and it never left the notes again.
Right trainer, white gone grey, on the towpath edge below Lock 23E at Slaithwaite. The notebook doesn't say owt about laces or size, which tells you I hadn't settled what I were recording yet. I took a photograph and it didn't come out, which were the usual state of affairs in them days.
I'll have set off at half seven and I'll have had the flask, but the notebook says nothing about either and I'm not going to pretend it does. Fourteen years on, cold and dry is all I can give you, and it's more than any shoe before it got.
Written up August 2026, from the notebook.
