Farnley Tyas — Child's Sandal, Brown

Field edge off Woodsome Road, Farnley Tyas  ·  Shoe #272  ·  Conditions: hot, first proper day of summer

Hot day, this. First proper one of the summer, and the notebook's handwriting goes a bit broad in the heat, which it always does — you can read the weather off the pen as well as off the page. Child's sandal, right, brown, the buckle sort, at a field edge off Woodsome Road at Farnley Tyas. The buckle were done up, which I recorded in place of laces, that being the nearest equivalent field. Good condition. This one hadn't been out long — days, not weeks — and the leather still had its shop colour on the underside of the strap.

The barley in the field were well up and moving in what breeze there were, and Farnley Tyas were doing what Farnley Tyas does, which is look like a postcard and keep quiet about it. I photographed the sandal, noted it, and left it exactly as found, same as always. A child's shoe gets the same procedure as any other. That's the whole of the method and it doesn't flex.

Cheese and pickle under the hedge after, in the shade, which by then were worth more than the sandwiches. The flask were more or less warm, and the notebook observes that in June that's all you want from a flask, which I stand by. There's a school of thought says don't take a flask out at all in summer and I've heard the argument and it's not for me. The flask goes. The register has its fields and I have mine.

Written up August 2026, from the notebook.
