Canal Towpath, Milnsbridge — Left Plimsoll, Black

Canal towpath, Milnsbridge  ·  Shoe #276  ·  Conditions: damp after overnight rain

The Milnsbridge towpath carries a bit of history for this register, it being where the sandal went missing in 2021 — documented in August, gone within a fortnight, the first entry ever marked lost. So when a chap off the walking forum flagged a plimsoll on the same stretch, I went with more than the usual interest, though I want it on record that I don't read owt into the location. Shoes turn up where people go, and people go along towpaths. That's geography, not mystery.

Left plimsoll, black, elastic sort, no laces. It were on the bank edge with the toe towards the water, which I noted as a plain fact of position, the same as I'd note a shoe pointing up a hill. Condition fair. Damp morning after overnight rain and the towpath were claggy — the notebook has a thumbprint of actual towpath on that page, which I've left, it being evidence of conditions in its own right.

This were the third find of the year to come in through the forum, and the notebook pauses to say the register were getting correspondence now and it took some getting used to. Reading that back in 2026, with the back pages of every book since full of phone numbers and forum names, it's like hearing meself notice the tide coming in. I confirmed it in person, same as I confirm everything, photographed it, and left it as found. Whether it went the way of the 2021 sandal I can't tell you — I've walked that stretch since and not seen it, but I never marked it lost because I never made a proper return visit. The register only says what the register knows.

Written up August 2026, from the notebook.
