The notebook gives me one line for this one: left trainer, white, by the lock gate. Lock 23E is the one below the village, where the towpath narrows. I took a photograph and it didn't come out, which were the usual story in them days — the phone I had then couldn't manage owt before nine in the morning, and I mostly walk early.
I'll have had the flask with me, February on the canal, but there's nowt in the book about it, so I can't tell you how it did. Sixteen years on I couldn't picture the trainer itself. The lock gate I could draw you.
