Calder & Hebble Towpath, Shepley Bridge — Right Trainer, White

Calder & Hebble towpath, Shepley Bridge, Mirfield  ·  Shoe #72  ·  Conditions: cold, frost on the lock beams

First of 2015, and a fair way from my usual ground. The notebook has me on the Calder & Hebble towpath near Shepley Bridge Marina, which is Mirfield, and I were over that side more than usual that year for reasons I go into elsewhere in this register. The shoe itself were a right trainer, white gone grey, and the laces gone entirely. The notebook says frost on the lock beams, which is the sort of detail I'm glad I put down, because I can see it now and I don't think I'd have remembered it otherwise.

I took a photograph and it didn't come out. That were the way of it in them days more often than not, and I've long since stopped minding. The notebook ends the entry with the line 'a shoe is a shoe', which I stand by. It doesn't matter whose ground it's on. If it's a lone shoe and I've seen it with my own eyes, it goes in the book, and this one went in as number 72.

No flask in the notes yet. The flask will have been with me — it always were — but January 2015 is before I started writing it down, so I can't tell you how the tea held up. Not long after this, I could.

Written up August 2026, from the notebook.
