Skipton — The Wellington Boot Incident

Near Skipton, North Yorkshire  ·  Logged separately  ·  Conditions: warm, sunny

I want to be straightforward about this one. I drove to Skipton on the basis of a report of a notable sighting near the canal. When I arrived, it was a wellington boot. Left foot. Green. Fairly standard.

I have logged it. I took three photographs. I had my sandwiches by the canal, which were good — it were a nice day and Skipton's a pleasant town. I don't regret the trip. But I want to be clear that I have reservations about whether wellington boots properly belong in the main count, and this is one of the reasons. You can leave a wellington boot somewhere without it being particularly notable. The circumstances are different. I've written a longer note on this in the field guide.

I've kept the wellington boots in a separate ledger since 2021. Current count: 23. I am still thinking about what to do with them.
